Hats off to heritage

It may be the oldest hat shop in the world, but the millinery pioneers of London are firmly focused on keeping pace with fashion of today

Established in 1676, James Lock & Co is the oldest hat shop in the world, as well as being one of the oldest family owned businesses still in existence. We are famous for lots of reasons, among which is the development of the bowler hat in 1850, as well as providing hats for many historical figures including Sir Winston Churchill, Charles Chaplin, Anthony Eden, the Duke of Wellington and Admiral Lord Nelson.

A postcard from abroad was once delivered to the shop, simply addressed to “The best hatters in the world, London”. Ask any London taxi driver for “Lock’s”, and without question he will deliver you to 6, St James’s Street.

Over the years, Lock’s have supplied headwear to many tens of thousands of people from all walks of life who have sought out quality and service.

Today we are proud to hold the royal warrants for the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales.

Our ranges and selection of headwear are ever-changing, still providing traditional and functional styles but keeping pace with fashion and current trends.

House designer Sylvia Fletcher has been creating exclusive designs for our ladies department for the past 18 years. Sylvia is one of London’s premier milliners and her collections are often featured in Vogue, Tatler, Marie Clare and many other leading magazines.

Sylvia creates three collections each season: the couture collection, which can be made to order and dyed to tone; the hat a porter label, which is a young, ready-to wear range; and also a wide selection of casual hats. Our experienced millinery team are available to advise what will suit your face shape and each hat is expertly fitted.
